Background
Moffit Cancer Center engaged Hammes Healthcare to provide program management and operational readiness services for the development of a new, 20-acre property intended to accommodate Moffit’s inpatient surgical needs. The development included a new inpatient surgical hospital, structured parking, central plant and opportunity for future on campus lodging. The new hospital would connect to Moffitt's existing outpatient facility on its McKinley campus.
Challenge
Given the significant goals Moffitt has for this program, creating realistic timelines and budgets is essential for keeping the project on track.
Solution
Hammes worked with Moffitt to establish a realistic budget for Phase One of construction and a plan for what will be added in Phase Two. Hammes also assisted Moffitt in planning for a possible third phase of development. This strategic plan was approved by the board, making for a smooth start to the project. Construction began in 2020 with Hammes leading a diverse group of project representatives from four states.
Hammes provided operational readiness services that supported the clinical and operational requirements of the new hospital spanning staffing and onboarding, contracts, licensures, accreditation, IT, training and more. Hammes helped facilitate a soft launch with numerous mock scenarios prior to go-live to ensure a smooth transition for Moffitt staff.
The new 10-story, 500,000-square-foot Moffitt McKinley Hospital opened to patients on July 31, 2023. It features 19 operating suites including two intraoperative MRI ORs, 72 prep and recovery rooms, and 128 inpatient beds. The new inpatient surgical hospital includes two shelled floors capable of holding 64 additional beds and structural provisions that provide the potential to double the bed capacity in future phases.
